Meet Evelyna Nomasomi Magibisela, our senior of the month!

Evelyna first came to GAPA years ago and quickly saw it as a safe haven. Now she makes sure to spread that sense of hope the other grannies have given to her.

Evelyna has a heart full of appreciation for what GAPA has brought her. She speaks highly of how it provides a place for seniors to learn about their own health, cultivating a supportive community with the opportunity to share their hardships with each other. In Khayelitsha, the elderly are often treated poorly and left with no one to care for them, hence why community support services like GAPA are so important to the seniors. They are able to talk through the struggles they face at home and offer each other encouragement and words of wisdom, leaving with hope and a reminder that things will get better.

She greatly values GAPA’s weekly club meetings and group outings. Recently, she got the chance to speak about her upbringing to University students, giving them a greater perspective on generational differences. Tuesday’s Health Club holds workshops providing quality resources and professional advice on cardiovascular health, gender-based violence, and legal processes. Additionally, Evelyna has gained new skills in beadwork, knitting, crochet, and sewing during Thursday’s Sewing Class workshops.

When Evelyna speaks about her appreciation for the other grannies, it is evident how much of an impact GAPA has had on her outlook on life. Elda Sidlabane leads many group discussions that showcase her devotion to supporting the grannies, making sure they know there are people that care for them. The amount they all care for one another is never overlooked, bringing them peace and most importantly, a sense of community.
